Page RankPage Rank For Traffic

Also Known As Link Popularity

As part of your strategy for getting more traffic you should understand what link popularity for page rank (PR) is, and how it affects website traffic. The bottom line is, to get more web traffic your website needs to be popular.

Link popularity for getting page rank (PR) is only used by Google as they monitor your inbound links to see how popular your website is. Considering that Google provides search results for itself "Google" it also provides search results for AOL, Netscape and several other search engines so they account for around 80% of the internets search volume. That is huge! So when you rank well in the organic listings (Not Pay Per Click) which are the natural listing that Google provides for FREE you will show up across all the search engines that Google provides search results for. Having a good understanding of what is important to Google can directly affect your traffic gaining strategy.

Google uses a factor called "Relevancy" which determines how relevant your website is to the keyword that is being searched for. Now when they do this they count the number of website that are linking to you creating the concept called "Link Popularity". What your looking for here are links from other preferably, high page rank websites that use a specific keyword to link to you. See link building for traffic for more details.

Example: There is a link from Facebook (Page Rank 9) for the word "pens" to you pen website. Google counts this as one valuable link making your website more relevant then those website that don't have a link, therefore putting you higher in the search results listings. *Note the more sites that link to you with the keyword pens the more popular your site becomes to Google.

Increasing your link popularity should be part of your everyday traffic building strategy. Here are some idea to help you build link popularity.
  • Obtain oneway links to your site by joining 3 way link exchange sites. I don't advise link trading unless both sites have the same theme as unrelated sites can actually hurt your PR.
  • Live web directories, allot are FREE and others may cost a bit. I recommend paying only for directories that have a high PR and will include you many others for the same price.
  • Vertical Portals, are theme based directories that you can sign your website up to provided that it is with the same theme.
  • Articles sites will allow you to post an article with one or two links back to your in it.

Google page rankNot all links are created equal

Google give more importance to links from higher PR website which is why I recommend you include this in you link build strategy. Google calls this scoring and it assigns every website with its' own PR score between 0 - 10, the higher the score the better the PR. The PR is displayed with a little green bar, the more green the higher the page rank.

Your goal is to get a page rank of 8 if you are ecommerce site but a PR of 5 is amazing and once you get there you will notice that other sites will find you and request links from your site. Google caps the ecommerce site at 8. The biggest ecommerce site in the world is Amazon and it is still at 8.

Keep in mind that your ranking in google is checked and rated all the time and the little green bar can move up and down on you.

To get the page rank indicator you need to download the Google Toolbar, once you have it installed you can determine every websites PR that you visit including your own. You will notice that if you put you cursor over the bar an actual numerical designation will appear.

Page Rank Strategy

Remember that Google considers quality links or valuable links, links that come from pages with good Page Rank themselves. If a page is linking to you and this page has good PR too, it's a more valuable link. The key here is to get these links form these types of websites but also make sure they are the same theme or topic as you but also try you best to make sure that the link is using a keyword you want to rank well for. This isn't easy to do but it makes your link more relevant.

You want to grow the number of links to your site gradually over the course of time because if you try to get too many too quick this looks suspicious. A huge spike in the number of links to your site is viewed as Spam. Google guesses that you might be adding the links yourself, or using link baiting, or other spamming techniques.

Take your time and try to add a few per day or 5 -15 per week at a steady pace.

How does Google figure out where to place you for a certain keyword searches

We know now that the best links you can get are from websites with good Page Rank that are related in theme or topics as yours.

This is where content and link relevance comes into plays. Google looks at the content of your page to determine where you'll appear in their search results. So it starts by looking at the sites that link to yours. What topics or themes is that site about? If they talk about pens and have a link to your site, there's a good chance that your site is about pens, pencils, or something relevant.
