As you probably know by now link building is the only way to

good and bad, let's discuss,
Bad link building strategies
Using software: This can be
good or bad because if the software you bought is out of date then some of
the directories may not exist anymore. Also some of the directories maybe
blacklisted by Google and are penalized which in turn will hurt your
rankings. Another point is some software blast out links by the hundreds
which will look unnatural too Google and they will expect that you have a
software that is spamming websites and they will penalize you for it. Most
directories use CAPTCHA to make sure you're a real human and not software
and will not let you list with them unless you do it manually or semi manually.

Manually submitting to oneway link directories is a slow process but at least you know what the page rank of the directory is and the proper category to get a link from. Also you control how many you do each day so you not spamming hundreds of directories at the same time.

you always ask them to add your link first and send you the link to
where it can be found, there are allot of scammers out there looking for
just a one way link from your website. They will even go so far as to
swap links then a week later remove your link for their site making your
